Measures of change

Training

Education and training is central to changing human behaviour. We are developing a training programme, including posters and a staff handbook, alongside a new bin specifically designed to facilitate higher rates of waste stream separation in hospitality. This will be tied together in the future with an online platform and app, so we can attempt to slow down the climate clock together.

Currently, there is a lack of training and education on correct recycling behaviour across the whole of Cornwall’s industries. This presents an opportunity for positive change through training of staff members.

The training and education programme is a measure produced by WWS to support businesses in learning about waste reduction. In order to use the bins correctly, people need to know how to recycle properly. Therefore, we will provide toolbox talks to staff on how to recycle.

Data on food waste reduction

A lack of food waste recycling in hospitality is contributing to excessive nitrogen fertiliser use in agriculture and food waste being sent to incinerators that burn food into the atmosphere, this results in less nutrients in our diet, more carbon in the atmosphere and a reduction in soil quality, as well as pollution of water due to un-natural fertilisers. Diverting this waste back into the soil will reverse the negative effects of un-natural fertilisers. We will provide data on food waste reduction through waste audits.

Waste Audit

Waste Audits used to provide data on changes to recycling behaviour. An Audit will be carried out pre and post implementation of the training programme, to provide a measure of changes seen to recycling behaviour.
